Radical Tenderness Workshop

Radical Tenderness Workshop

Contemporary productivity culture demands that we always move faster and grind harder. But the current season invites us to balance toughness with tenderness. In this session, we will explore the notion of tenderness as a rebellious act, and try out some exercises to soothe ourselves into the stillness of the winter season.

Over 75 minutes we'll use a unique blend of philosophy, science, poetry, contemplative practice, and collective reflection to remember what it feels like to be tender to ourselves. There's no need to prepare or bring anything. You'll leave your phone at the door and be guided through the session, leaving with a greater sense of clarity on what tenderness means to you as well as several contemplative practices you can try out on your own.

This event is brought to you in collaboration with Oude Kerk Delft: Sacred Sessions.

About Madeleine
Madelaine Ley is a philosopher, spiritual ecologist, and contemplative artist. Her varied work includes lecturing at Delft University of Technology and Lassonde Engineering School in Canada on digital citizenship, responsible AI, intersectional approaches to tech, and robot-ethics; hosting Sacred Sessions, non-religious gatherings that blend philosophy, art, science, contemplative practice and collective reflection; writing and podcasting for Beauty in the Mire; and experimenting with contemplative art. She was named one of the “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics” by Lighthouse3 in 2022 and has been featured by the BBC, Leidsch Dagblad, Yes! Magazine, and Life Itself, as well as funded by The European Pavilion, Horizon 2020 and twice-funded by the Social Science Research Council of Canada.

Screen Printing Workshop

Tonight is your chance to get an introduction to screen printing. In this class you learn how to screen print on a custom tote bag and explore various printing techniques firsthand.

We’ll start with a short introduction to the history of screen printing, then walk through each step of the screen printing process on textiles. This will include everything from creating logos and screens to using different types of textiles and inks. We’ll also experiment with screen printing on cotton T-shirts. The custom items will be properly treated so everyone can take them home at the end.

This event is produced in collaboration with Mesh Print Club.

Taking place in Create. Reserve your free tickets here.

About the host:
I’m Teun, a 26-year-old creative from Rotterdam, working across multiple disciplines. From organizing music camps to leading audiovisual projects and running my own clothing brand, I’m passionate about combining creativity with entrepreneurship. Together with a small team of professionals, we bring our diverse skills together to push creative boundaries and create work that feels authentic and impactful. All under the same name “We Don’t Care.”

This year, we also launched the We Don’t Care Foundation, where we use our experience and network to support young talent in the creative and cultural sectors, helping them take steps toward professionalization. Our goal is to provide real opportunities for growth and collaboration, fostering a community where new ideas and innovation thrive. At We Don’t Care, we’re all about empowering creativity and turning ideas into tangible results.

In all my projects, I enjoy having creative control and staying deeply involved in every step of the process. With my clothing brand, this led me to discover screen printing—a craft that combines hands-on work with artistic freedom. For the past couple of years, I’ve been developing this skill at the Mesh Print Club in Rotterdam, where I’ve learned the intricacies of the process. Now, I’m excited to pass on this knowledge through workshops that cover everything from the basics of screen printing to how to apply designs to textiles and troubleshoot common challenges.

Creative Writing Night

Do you love writing? Would you like to finish that story you started last year? Or perhaps you are looking for a community of writers with whom to share your work in a supportive way? If so, join us for a lively creative writing evening during which we are hosting not one but two workshops exploring winter warmth and farewells with Helena Grande and Sci-Fi with Busra Erkara. See below for descriptions of each workshop.

The evening will end with a sharing session where participants can, if they wish, share work written during the workshops or some already existing writing. We will also hear from our workshop leaders who are writers themselves.

There will be music from Groover Jazz, free drinks, and fries from Hieper de Pieper to keep you running all evening.

Winter Warmth with Helena Grande
In this workshop, we will focus on generative writing and free association exercises to enhance your imagination. Whether it is a personal or fictional story, this class will allow you to experiment with ideas and structure. You will surely end up writing at least one tiny story!

Since winter is coming, we will touch upon themes of winter warmth and saying goodbye. Get ready to jot down ideas, recount memories, or give birth to a new character! Together we will generate a safe space to share our writing. No previous experience writing is needed.

Sci-Fi with Busra Erkara

In this entry-level science fiction workshop, we will explore the makings of a compelling sci-fi story and work on short writing exercises to get the participants started on world and character-building. As part of the workshop, the participants will read snippets from the works of Isaac Asimov, Octavia Butler, Greg Egan, and more. The session will close with a short Q&A and reflection session. Expect collective rage and creativity!

Creative Studio Session Photography: Exercises for the mind

Creative Studio Session Photography: Exercises for the mind

This week, our design expert Chiara will propose a series of stimulating creative exercises to guide students in their journey towards realising their creative projects. These exercises are designed by industry experts and aim to develop not only a final product, but also the method, techniques, and creative mindset. During this session, you will play the game ‘Play 40’.

Play 40 is a game designed to explore and generate new ideas. It consists of two decks of 40 cards each. One deck features an image on one side and a word on the other, while the other deck displays the same word on one side and a brief comment, suggestion, or perspective to explore on the other. These cards are designed to stimulate the association of images, words, and concepts, diverging from traditional games based on risk and calculation.

The game was devised by the Japanese designer Isao Hosoe, who believed that during play, humans could fully express their intelligence. Through Play 40, mutual interests are created, affinities or differences in tastes are discovered, and relationships between players are established, giving rise to a kind of playful community.

The goal of playing with Play 40 is to understand which ideas are relevant, how they connect, and which ones are crucial for achieving common goals, emphasizing the quality of ideas and their relationships rather than their quantity."

Hosted by Chiara.

Drop in from 19:00 and stick around until 21:00. Reserve your free tickets here.

Panelists:
Jeroen van der Kwaak is an urban planner at the Municipality of Rotterdam, where he balances a varied workload to manage the challenges of ADHD in structured settings like meetings and workshops. Born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, Jeroen grew up in a family where ADHD was common—his brother was diagnosed early, and his father likely has it as well. Jeroen was diagnosed at 10 and faced challenges with focus in school, though he excelled academically.

He later pursued architecture, landscape, and urbanism in Delft, where he completed his degree despite difficulties with his thesis. Today, Jeroen combines his expertise in urban planning with a thoughtful approach to managing his ADHD.

Luis Xertu is a Mexican and Dutch visual artist whose practice spans advertising, theatre, and contemporary art. After relocating from Mexico City to the Netherlands for his studies, he established himself as a freelance designer, collaborating with prominent theater companies. Today, Luis focuses on his independent work, creating mixed-media pieces that explore queer identity, transformation, and the passage of time. His innovative use of organic materials and visual storytelling has earned him recognition across Europe.

As a neurodivergent artist, Xertu has embraced the flexibility of his creative process to align with how his mind works. Through years of trial and error, he has refined a workflow that allows him to seamlessly navigate his attention, resulting in a practice free of the friction that once existed between his neurodivergence and his creative output.

Ashley Kalila works as a People & Culture Manager in a tech scale-up. She has discovered that her ADHD is a creative superpower that helps her thrive both in her work and life. Always knowing that something was different about her, receiving her diagnosis brought a deeper understanding of who she is and how to navigate the world.

Tesla Visser (she/her) is a structural engineering student at Delft University of Technology, where she combines her passion for building design with the unique insights that come from managing life with ADHD. Diagnosed in 2022, she’s been on a journey to find the balance between the demands of a rigorous academic programme and the nuances of studying with ADHD, bringing a relatable student perspective to this panel.

In addition to her studies, she explores a range of creative outlets that help keep her energised and inspired. She sings in a band, reads avidly, and takes time for activities like fencing, biking, and hiking to help manage her focus and stress. As someone who navigated the diagnosis while in university, she’ll share her experience of self-discovery, building support systems, and finding ways to thrive academically and personally.

Homesick Art Workshop

Create a reflective space for the things you miss most

This art correspondence workshop invites you to create space for the things you miss most. Guided by artist Martje Rullens, you will create an artistic piece of post including a written letter and a handmade envelope, and use art to reflect on the theme of missing.

Enjoy an evening of writing, drawing, a quick lesson in envelope construction and decoration, and finally a moment to write (or draw) a message to anyone in your life who needs a little tenderness, be that your mum, an unrequited love, your pet, or even yourself.

Sure, it’s easier to send a text or make a phone call, but a handwritten letter is a meaningful alternative. Putting pen to paper is a personal and intentional form communication that encourages focus and care without distraction. Leave the session with a beautiful collective memory that you or a loved one can treasure and return to in the future.

Kintsugi Workshop XL

Explore the Art of Imperfection

Join this class with Annelies Nuy on the art of Kintsugi, an age-old Japanese tradition in which items of broken pottery are repaired with a golden lacquer. There is much to be gained, both artistically and spiritually, from the practice and philosophy of Kintsugi, but most notably it teaches us to celebrate imperfection rather than conceal it.

After an introduction and a relaxation exercise, you will break a plate you have brought (or take a piece of porcelain you love and have already accidentally broken), and use the shards to compose a new plate.

This workshop invites students to embrace imperfection and reflect on how we turn perceived "flaws" into strengths. It offers a calming, mindful experience that reduces stress and encourages personal reflection.

This event takes place in Create.

Please note: There are two timeslots for this workshop. You can join the first sitting (17:15–19:15) or the second sitting (19:30–21:30). There are separate ticket options available for each time slot. You can reserve your free tickets here.

Creative Studio Session Storytelling & Drawing: Portrait drawing concepts

Storytelling & Drawing focuses on the fundamentals that make up any great visual artwork. We train techniques, hone skills, play with materials and guide you during your artistic process. These sessions can cultivate the quality of your drawings, will help you explore visual concepts and stimulate creativity. Next to that; feel free to join us with any creative project you are already working on.

During this session, we will not only draw the portrait but also research how to express the emotional qualities that we want the portrait to have.

This session is guided by Nick.

Reserve your free tickets here.

About the Creative Studio Sessions
The Creative Studio Sessions are an open invitation to get creative without pressure or expectation. Join our studio experts every weekday evening for a free-wheeling session focusing on a different artistic discipline and theme. These sessions are not art classes, but rather open-ended, dedicated studio time for students to explore concepts, techniques, or creative prompts as set by our studio experts. No matter your skill level, everyone is invited to join. Come if you are looking for new inspiration and ideas, or to try out a new skill. Your creativity is like muscle, it needs a workout!

You are also welcome to work independently in the creative studio during these hours if you do not wish to participate in the Creative Studio Sessions.

Creative Studio Session Drawing: Urban Sketching

Urban sketching is simply drawing what is in front of you at any given time, in any given location. This can be buildings (like the name suggests), but also plants, people, pets and whatever you find yourself around. It’s a form of keeping a diary, except you can do it with a group of friends.

Hosted by Michiel.

Join from 19:00, and stick around until 21:00. Reserve your free tickets here.
